Almost every law student starts their 1L year worrying about how they’re going to pay for it. We get it, law school is expensive. That’s why applying for scholarships ASAP is essential to lessening your law school debt. But aside from the cost of tuition, law student life can get pretty pricey, too.
Here are some of our favorite ways to save money on law school essentials.
Make Your Meals at Home
This one is a no-brainer. Going out to eat is a fast way to burn through cash you don’t have. Especially if that meal is accompanied by alcohol.
Making your meals at home is a great way to save money and stay healthy. Remember, food plays a big role in your energy level, so don’t stock up on junk food. When you head out for the day, pack yourself a few snacks and homemade lunch. Your wallet will thank you.
Create a Realistic Budget
Budgeting is never fun, we know. But sticking to a strict budget can mean the difference between adding more to your debt and getting ahead of it. Make a list of your expenses and monthly income and see where you might be overspending. Every month go back to that budget and adjust it as needed until it’s easy to stick to.
Here are a few great budgeting apps that might help if you’re not very good at math (like me). One last tip, don’t neglect your credit card debt. It’ll come back to haunt you in the future.
Download a Coupon App
Speaking of apps, there are tons of apps out there that can help you save money on everything from groceries to clothing. Try downloading a coupon app on your phone or install the Honey extension to your Chrome browser.
Use Your School’s Resources
When you visit your school on Admitted Student’s Day, make sure to check out the available resources they have on campus. If you’re looking for a new laptop, check to see if your school has any special discounts for students. Also, see if your school has a gym or other health facilities on campus. Working out is a great way to stay healthy and balanced throughout law school.
Buy Used Textbooks
The cost of law school textbooks adds up quick. Don’t be afraid to go online and do your own research instead of purchasing from your school’s bookstore. You can find tons of good deals on used textbooks or rental options online here: Valore Bookstore, Amazon, Barnes and Noble. You might even be able to borrow textbooks from 2L and 3L students you meet at Admitted Student’s Day.
Take Advantage of Free Study Aids
There’s nothing like free stuff, especially as a law student. Swing by your school’s law library to see if they have print or digital supplemental study aids available for free. Some schools also offer study aid subscriptions that can help you save money in the long run.
